The City of
Haddam is located between two creeks, Mill Creek and Myers
Branch. Pictures shown below depict two different creek scenes. Folk
lore had it that
a tornado would not strike between two creeks when they
fork. Whether this proved to be true or not can only be
speculated by this write. What is known is that Haddam experienced
major flooring at least twice throughout the years.
A huge flood, caused by a cloud burst to the
north/west, happened on June 8, 1941 when both creeks merged at Haddam.
Much damage was done to main street businesses, especially
Hoffman's hardware, and various homes
located on the flat ground below the hill. In 1869 the first flood hit
Haddam, often
said to be even larger by town residents that were alive to make the
comparison.
Many times Myers Branch has gone "out of it's
banks" after heavy rainfall. A trip to the cemetery after a big rain
will give a close-up view of the muddy water running under the bridge
as shown.
In contrast the other pictures show the beauty that
is possible within a creek setting when it is mostly dry.
